There is a trend in the Philippines today that everyone wants to go to school to become a Nurse. Even those who have a good job already look at nursing as a way to make even more money. Many of them are what we call “second coursers.” These are professionals who already hold one degree, but invest into a second degree in Nursing, despite the fact that Nursing is one of the most expensive courses in the Philippines. Filipinos these days will spend all their savings just to get a Nursing degree to try to get a high paying job overseas. Others are lucky to have sponsors abroad, especially those who have relatives in the US. MDs are privileged amongst all, as they can keep their job as they go to a Nursing school. Can you believe that? MDs are becoming nurses? In most countries that would be crazy but in the Philippines even MDs have the same reason as other second coursers as to why they want to become nurses.
Short of the few unfortunates who get scammed with bad job offers, you are guaranteed to make good money once you have a Nursing degree and are able to find a job in the US, and that is the reason for so much interest by so many Filipinos. Becoming a nurse will almost always earn you more money, and when we say money in Nursing we mean ($$$) dollars. In Nursing, you invest a lot of money, but then it pays you back with greater rewards in life that you will treasure forever. First, becoming a nurse will buy you an opportunity to go abroad, especially America. Not only that, when you go to America as a nurse, you go there with your family on an immigrant visa. Isn’t that great? Second, once you are in the US you will start to earn money that you’ve never dreamed of earning in the Philippines, because $1 is around 50 pesos, and most US Nurses make at least $3,500 per month or more if you work harder. How much is that $3,500 in the Philippines? It’s around 175,000 pesos. Wow! That’s a lot of money! That is even more than a year’s salary of many employees in the Philippines, and that is just for one month. So, who would not like to be a nurse?
Nursing is a trend now, and it will be a trend for at least the next few decades because of a worldwide Nursing shortage and a growing population of elderly that need more medical care. For as long as there are sick people in America, Filipino nurses will be in demand.
